Dubrovnik

We caught an early ferry from Split to Dubrovnik that took most of the morning. We had a little deja vu on our ride back, since our ferry stopped at most of the islands we stayed at in the weeks prior. It was great to reminisce and talk about where we might stay when we come back.

Our Airbnb was located above the walled city of Dubrovnik, so we took a cab from the main harbor. Our host met us and got us situated in our apartment and gave us some good advice about places to eat, routes to walk, and lots more. I can’t say enough about using Airbnb when you travel. We have had wonderful hosts and great places to stay.

Our apartment looked down on the old city of Dubrovnik, which made for an awesome view! It also provided us with lots of exercise each day. I now know why it is such a big tourist attraction – it is a really cool place. We saved Dubrovnik for last because it is such a busy place, and we figured that at the end of our trip – one month later than the beginning – would be a little less hectic

The first thing we did was to find the nearest grocery store so that we would have coffee in the morning! We also bought a few groceries so we could have dinner “at home” that night, looking down on the city and figuring out what we would do the next day.

One thing most people need to do in Dubrovnik is to “walk the wall” around the city. So we decided to get that out of the way right away on our second day! I was planning on an early morning walk to avoid the crowds, but alas I awoke too late. Not to worry, there is always a sunset walk. We found a place for dinner before we started our trek around the wall. We had some great views and exercise, and then a nice dinner. The crowds were not bad and I admit it was kinda fun being a tourist.

The next day we decided to take a boat to Lokrum Island. We could see this island very well from our apartment. It has a very interesting history. If you’re interested in learning more, check out what Wikipedia says about it. We had some great hikes and enjoyed the wildlife around us. The wildlife included peacocks and big bunnies! They were not afraid of us and one bunny managed to steal a piece of pizza from our dining neighbors.

Our next adventure was a bus ride to the little village of Cavtat. It is about 9 miles from Dubrovnik. It was another beautiful day with a couple of great hikes around the coast. We met our first Minnesotan at lunch today. Well, she actually lives in the UK, but grew up in Crystal, MN and visits frequently. We decided to take a boat back to Dubrovnik instead of the bus. The sun was starting to go down, so it was a beautiful ride home!

Our last day in Dubrovnik, we happened to be in the right place at the right time. Today was a special event called the “Dubrovnik Table”, which involved the longest table of food and wine that I have ever seen. It was a charity event where many chefs from the city showcased their culinary creations! There was lots and lots of food and wine. You buy a plate and a cup and food tickets, one ticket for each item. Paul asked how long the event would last and the reply was, “Until the food runs out – most of it’s gone within an hour”! So, we stood poised with our plate, cup and tickets waiting for the bell to strike 12! Let me tell you, it was a free-for-all. We managed to get a few good looking desserts, and a little burger that we had been watching the chef prepare for over an hour, and it was delicious! It was a lot of fun to be part of the crowd.

The weather was starting to turn and we made it back to our apartment just as rain began to fall and the wind began to blow. Tomorrow we start our journey home.  Good timing!

We will definitely be back.

[Still finishing up the photos!]
