Split, Croatia

Our next stop was the city of Split. We got a sneak preview on our way to Brač because of ferry schedules, so I knew we were in for a little more action. Split is the second largest city in Croatia after the capital, Zagreb.  When we arrived the cruise ship Queen Victoria was docked there.  But we soon learned these huge hotels came and went daily – even this late in the season.

Our Airbnb rental was conveniently located near Diocletian’s Palace, which is the “main attraction” of the city. The Palace area is composed of many small streets that wind in and out and around. It was fun to explore and try to decide what and where to eat, most of the time.

There is a beautiful cathedral and bell tower that provided an amazing view of the city. We enjoyed lots of people watching and listening to music in the open air court of the Palace. I’m not sure if I mentioned the gelato? Yes, a wonderful Italian influence that I love.

We decided we would treat ourselves to a day of sailing while in Split. Paul loves to sail and unfortunately I get seasick, but I was armed with Dramamine. It was a beautiful day, but without a lot of wind. We did manage to put the sails up, but mostly enjoyed being on the water and exploring some islands and bays that you can only reach by boat.

Our captain was a young sailor and his mate was his cousin. It was fun to chat with them and learn about their lives. Both their fathers are ship captains.  We were privileged to be the first to learn that our captain was going to be a father. I guess we were the second as he found out after receiving a phone call from his wife while we were sailing. There was toasting and tears all around.

A visit to Trogir was recommended by several people and our Airbnb hosts in Brač actually got married in the cathedral there. So, we hopped a bus for a quick hour ride to this town. It was fun to tour the cathedral and picture our hosts on their wedding day. We decided to hop a ferry back to Split, one more chance to be on the water before heading inland by bus to Plitvice National Park!

[Still finishing up the photos!]
